Welcome to all our music lovers. We are very happy to announce our artists for this year’s festival. As always, the Goldner String Quartet, acknowledged as Australia’s finest, will again be in residence and we have chosen some of our favourite performers to appear with us.
As most of you are probably aware, the Goldner String Quartet has appeared at every Music in the Hunter festival since its inception in 1991 and over that time has performed a staggering list of the finest chamber music. The players consist of Dene Olding and Dimity Hall, violins, Irina Morozova, viola and Julian Smiles, cello. For 2016, we will be presenting string quartets by Haydn, Beethoven Shostakovich and Borodin as well as combining in various combinations with our virtuoso guest artists.
James Crabb (classical accordion) who has wowed our audiences will make a welcome return in 2016. His special brand of musicianship encompasses all styles from Baroque to Jazz and his innovative approach to performance makes familiar classical music come alive on the expressive classical accordion.
Over the years of the festival, we have not performed a great deal of baroque music but all that is about to change. We have two acknowledged masters of the genre. Genevieve Lacey is internationally renowned as a recorder virtuoso of the first rank. Her vivacious approach to music-making is sure to uplift you and enrich your weekend experience.
Another expert on baroque music is one of Australia’s foremost harpsichordists, Neal Peres da Costa. Neal’s presence at the festival means that we can programme more Baroque music so watch out for plenty of masterpieces from Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi and others with these virtuosi as soloists.
Rounding out our musical line-up is Kirsty McCahon (double bass) who has appeared with all of us many times and is a performer with great experience in the baroque field. The addition of double bass to our list of instruments means we can perform wonderful baroque concerti like a true chamber ‘orchestra’ and give these works the sonority they demand.
Our beloved Ken Healey AM is back again as pre-concert speaker to illuminate these concerts and give us extra insight into the music in his unmistakable way, blending vast knowledge and gentle humour.
I hope you can all join us for the 2016 Music in the Hunter and introduce some of your friends to this extra special festival of chamber music.
